Secrets of the Magic Ring by Karen McQuestion {Review + Giveaway}

Title: Secrets of the Magic Ring
Author: Karen McQuestion
Publisher: AmazonEncore
Pages: Paperback, 147 pages
Genre: Fantasy, Middle Grade
Release Date: November 8th 2011
Source: Received from Author

When nine-year-old Paul explores the hole dug for his backyard swimming pool, he discovers a box containing a ring—a ring that turns out to be magical. Moments later, a mysterious boy shows up demanding the ring; luckily, Paul’s trusty dog Clem scares him away. To keep the ring safe, Paul hides it in his pillow case, where, to his horror, it’s discovered by his mother, who loans it to his Aunt Vicky. Things get even stranger when Vicky, a non-swimmer, falls into the now-finished pool and discovers that her greatest secret wish has been granted—she can swim! As the ring gets passed around and wishes are made, a wild series of talents and circumstances threaten to turn their lives upside down…forever. But Jasmine, a fairy of the woods, has an idea, and if everyone cooperates, she just might be able to put an end to the shenanigans and return their lives to normal. Wildly original and full of vibrant, chaotic imagination, Secrets of the Magic Ring is proof of the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for.”

My Review:
I was told about this book by my step daughter, she had got the book from her local library and decided to read it and loved it! So, naturally, since we like most of the same type of reads, I decided that I wanted to read this great book as well. So, when the author, Karen McQuestion offered me her book from my wishlist, Easily Amused, we started to talk about this and she had this one sent right over as well.

I'm not going to lie, it took me a little bit to get into this book. I had to put it up a couple of times before I really started to get into the whole story line of the book. The characters were very likeable, the storyline was great, but at first it was missing that little 'oomph' to get me into it. While I loved Paul, he also seemed to be lacking a bit, as to what, I really can't put my finger on it.

As the story progressed, I absolutely loved this book! The fairies in this book were not like most fairies, with exotic names and really special abilities. They were just normal guardian fairies. They were assigned to each house watching over the families to make sure everything went smoothly.

When Paul finds this box buried deep within the ground where his pool is being put in, he can't wait to dig out this treasure box and see what is inside. There, of course, were some mishaps along the way, as all stories have. At one point Paul kind of questioned if his friend was really his friend as well. Which I'm sure we have all been there once or twice in our lives.

When things start to happen with the 'wishes' the wearer is granted things get a little interesting. It changed the lives of 5 people and 1 dog.

Ending Thoughts:
This was a very good story, fun for every age. The story was amazing and the characters unforgettable. I recommend this book for anyone young at heart and ages 10+.

Tess, a blacksmith’s daughter from a tiny hamlet near the mysterious Dragonswood, finds herself caught in the crosshairs of fate when she is accused of witchery and has to flee for her life along with her two best friends.

Q:  If you had to spend eternity inside the pages of a book which book would you choose and why?

A: This is an extremely hard question for me to answer. I could give you a list. But I will just narrow it down to a few.

1. The Iron Fey series simply because the Never Never is always changing, you learn something new all the time, I don't like the same thing all the time.

2. Harry Potter; because it's always cool to be magical. I would love to be a witch, I could cast some mean spells on some people, haha.

3. The Mortal Instruments; I just like the aspect of different cultures, so to speak, living amongst each other, and the possibility of whooping someone butt if need be.

Cover Reveal: Chosen Ones by Tiffany Truitt

Expected to be released April 2012 by Entangled Publishing

Isn't it gorgeous! I can't wait to read this one!
What if you were mankind’s last chance at survival?

Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.

Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger.

But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?

Review: Heist Society by Ally Carter

Title: Heist Society
Author: Ally Carter
Publisher: Hyperion Book CH
Pages: Paperback, 291 pages
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Chick-Lit
Release Date: May 17th 2011 (First published February 9th 2010)
Series: Heist Society
Source: Paperback

When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her to the Louvre...to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria...to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own--scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately, leaving "the life" for a normal life proves harder than she'd expected.

Soon, Kat's friend and former co-conspirator, Hale, appears out of nowhere to bring her back into the world she tried so hard to escape. But he has good reason: a powerful mobster's art collection has been stolen, and he wants it returned. Only a master thief could have pulled this job, and Kat’s father isn’t just on the suspect list, he is the list. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat’s dad needs her help.

For Kat there is only one solution: track down the paintings and steal them back. So what if it’s a spectacularly impossible job? She’s got two weeks, a teenage crew, and hopefully just enough talent to pull off the biggest heist in her family’s (very crooked) history--and, with any luck, steal her life back along the way.

My Review:

I've been wanting to read this book since it hit the shelves in 2010. Thankfully, because of Ruby's giveaway at Ruby Reads, I not only get the chance to read it, but I actually get to own a copy!

Katarina Bishop is a determined 15 year old, so determined that she leaves the family business to attend a private school. When something happens and she is forced to leave school, she gets pulled back into the family ways.

Think of Oceans Eleven meets The Breakfast Club. The writer pulled me right into the story and made me feel like I knew what it would be like to be a thief. Fun, fast-paced and dangerous.

Kat and Hale have a wonderful chemestry between them. It's refreshing. They aren't just thrown together for the sake of the book. There are genuine feelings between them that have developed through their whole union as friends and partners. It's a delightful change from your everyday teen romance. But at the same time, you want to push them together to rid them of the ever so present tension.

Ending Thoughts:
This is a great first book to what I hope will be a great series. I can't wait to read Uncommon Criminals, the sequel to this book.

The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

My Review:

What happens when you wrap YA, Sci-Fi, a little romance and a little mystery into one book? You get this 100%, simply amazing novel by Julie Cross, and it's called, Tempest!

This book was simply amazing! I loved the whole time traveling aspect. I will admit, at first it was a bit confusing, but that was only for the first few paragraphs, after that it was easy to get pulled right into this book and go on a wild ride with Jackson through time.

This isn't your everyday, run of the mill, time travel stories. Jackson Meyer is a nineteen year old "jumper" that can jump into the past, usually only a few hours into the past, not decades, and he can't jump forward either. But when something happens to his girlfriend, Holly, and himself that he wasn't prepared for, he is thrust into the past by two years with no way to return to his present time.

The writer takes you on a ride with Jackson as he starts to discover things about himself, his past and the people that he thought he knew. And he starts to learn that people aren't always as they seem.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA Sci-Fi, suspense and a little mystery.

My Review:
This was a very sweet children's book that teaches the child that a mother's love runs deeper than so many things, including chocolate. It also has a wonderful CD that comes with it with music and a song by the author to follow along with the book. My daughter (who's two) loves it and had me read it to her 4 times in a row.

A: It really depends, if I really like the book, I will keep it. If it was an alright book, or I liked it, I will do a giveaway. If I didn't care for it, I will donate it to my public library. I have sold some books on Ebay, quite a few actually, just to make ends meet. I really try to not get rid of anything though.

What's Going on?

I'm sure some of you have noticed that I haven't put up any book reviews lately. Well, there is a good explanation of that...I've been reading 4 different books, one of which is an eGalley. Not only am I reading multiple books, I just simply haven't had as much time to read them and quickly with the holiday's coming up. I've been pulling my hair out trying to wrap kids presents and getting food bought and ready to be prepared. It's my favorite time of year, but also most hectic.

If you guys can bare with me while I get back to normal here, I will be posting some much needed book reviews. I will have two (2) coming up soon, and those are:

Heist Society by Ally Carter
The Lying Game by Sara Shepard

These will be the ones to follow shortly after:

Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler
Easily Amused by Karen McQuestion
Mo Wren, Lost and Found by Tricia Springstubb
Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

The Storyteller by Antonia Michaelis
Release date: January 1, 2012

Summary from Goodreads
Anna and Abel couldn’t be more different. They are both seventeen and in their last year of school, but while Anna lives in a nice old town house and comes from a well-to-do family, Abel, the school drug dealer, lives in a big, prisonlike tower block at the edge of town. Anna is afraid of him until she realizes that he is caring for his six-year-old sister on his own. Fascinated, Anna follows the two and listens as Abel tells little Micha the story of a tiny queen assailed by dark forces. It’s a beautiful fairy tale that Anna comes to see has a basis in reality. Abel is in real danger of losing Micha to their abusive father and to his own inability to make ends meet. Anna gradually falls in love with Abel, but when his “enemies” begin to turn up dead, she fears she has fallen for a murderer. Has she?

Award-winning author Antonia Michaelis moves in a bold new direction with her latest novel: a dark, haunting, contemporary story that is part mystery, part romance, and part melodrama.
