Rose Blog Tour + Guest Post

Rose isn't like the other orphans at St Bridget's Home for Abandoned Girls. Instead of dreaming of getting adopted by loving, wealthy parents, Rose wants to get a job and be independent. She doesn't need anyone but herself. She finds her escape working as a maid for Mr. Fountain, an alchemist. Unable to ignore the magic that flows throughout the grand residence, Rose realizes that just maybe; she might have a little bit of magic in her too. This new series featuring magicians, witches, talking cats, mist-monsters, and friendships will have young readers in a trance!

Doesn't this sound pretty amazing? I thought it did too that is why I had to read it and I was so glad that I did! You can read my review here.

Holly Webb is a bestselling author in the UK with her books Lost in the Snow and Lost in the Storm. As a child growing up in London, Holly fell in love with stories from Ancient Greek myths, which led to studying Latin and Greek and eventually reading Classics at University. She worked for five years as a children's fiction editor, before deciding to become a writer. The Rose books stem from a childhood love of historical novels, and the wish that animals really could talk. She lives in Reading with her husband and three small children.

Holly Webb talks about her Fantasy Cast for her book, Rose.

Fantasy Cast List
Rose – Chloe Moretz
This is so difficult! Rose needs to be brave, determined, but quite matter-of-fact. She’s horrified by her magic at first, as she wants to be a maid – she’s amazed that she’s been lucky enough to get a job, and she thinks the magic will spoil everything. So whoever played her would need to be able to get that determination across, but be overtaken by the excitement of the magic growing inside her.

At first I thought of Kirsten Dunst, as she was amazing as a child vampire in Interview With the Vampire, but of course that was years and years ago. Actually, if I could have any child actress from whenever, I think I would go for Mara Wilson, who played Matilda in the film. She seemed quite as I imagine Rose – pretty, but not beautiful, very sensible, but with a sly sense of humour lurking underneath. I wonder if Chloe Moretz (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Hugo) would be able to look young enough to play Rose? In the book Rose thinks she’s ten, but she’s not quite sure, and the hard life at the orphanage, and having to be grown-up very quickly, would make her look older.

Mr Fountain – Colin Firth
But only if he could grow a large, curly moustache.

Miss Sparrow – Emma Watson
Miss Sparrow needs to be very beautiful, possibly too beautiful – not to spoil the plot, but her looks are magically enhanced. I’d love to see Emma Watson play another magical character, but this time, an evil one. (Thinking about it, Emma Watson would also have been wonderful as Rose!)

Bill (Or Freddie! )– Asa Butterfield
Bill is another of the servants at Mr Fountain’s house. He’s an orphan too, and he loves being a little bit older and more used to working than Rose. But he’s actually very kind, although he does his best to hide it. He needs to sound like a Londoner, which I think is probably easier for a British actor. But then I can see Asa Butterfield as Freddie, the snotty, conceited magician’s apprentice, too! He has a magical look to him. Can I have him twice with different-coloured hair, please?!

Gus (voice) – Alan Rickman
Because he has a lovely voice!

Gus is Mr Fountain’s spoilt white cat, and one of the first magical things to happen to Rose is that she realises she can hear him talking. He’s proud, lazy and obsessed with fishpaste sandwiches.

I first saw Alan Rickman in Truly, Madly, Deeply a long time ago but he can also be fabulously nasty (as the sheriff of Nottingham and of course as Snape in the Harry Potter films).  He’s great at sounding grumpy, which is very important for Gus!

{Cover Reveal} Through Glass by Rebecca Ethington

We are so excited to be able to bring to you the cover reveal for Rebecca Ethington’s THROUGH GLASS which releases in less than a month on September 20th, 2013.

Both the book’s cover and description are awesome and more than a little bit chilling and we cannot wait for its release.

If you’d like to know more about the author, Rebecca Ethington, be sure to check out her website, or any of the other places she hangs out online.

And if you can’t wait until September 20th for the release of THROUGH GLASS, the first book in her Imdalind series, KISS OF FIRE, is now available in eBook format for free at AMAZON, BARNES & NOBLE and for the KOBO.

We love the cover, but what do you think?

COMING SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2013

About THROUGH GLASS

Everyone remembers the day the sky went black. They remember the screams as the blackness ate those who were out in the open, those who surrounded themselves by light, and those who made noise.

Everyone remembers the voice from the sky, the way food disappeared.

Everyone remembers the day the sky went black, and the sun was wiped from the sky.

At least that’s what I hope. I hope that there is an ‘everyone’ that will remember.

I hope that I am not alone.

Because I remember.

I remember, because it was the day I became alone.

It was the day the house went silent, and the birds stopped singing. It was the day when everyone disappeared, everyone except the boy, the only person I have seen in two years.

The boy I talk to through the glass.

Waiting on Wednesday #WoW @Erica_ORourke @simonschuster

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It's to spotlight upcoming reads which I can't wait to get my hands on.

This week my book is:
Dissonance by Erica O'Rourke
Release date: August 5th 2014

Pre-order your copy today:
Amazon (kindle) | TBD (hardback)

Delancy Sullivan has always known there’s more to reality than what people see. Every time someone makes a choice, a new, parallel world branches off from the existing one. Eating breakfast or skipping it, turning left instead of right, sneaking out instead of staying in bed ~ all of these choices create an alternate universe in which an echo self takes the road not travelled and makes the opposite decision. As a Walker, someone who can navigate between these worlds, Del’s job is to keep all of the dimensions in harmony.

Normally, Del can hear the dissonant frequency that each world emits as clear as a bell. But when a training session in an off-key world goes horribly wrong, she is forbidden from Walking by the Council. But Del’s not big on following the rules and she secretly starts to investigate these other worlds. Something strange is connecting them and it’s not just her random encounters with echo versions of the guy she likes, Simon Lane.

But Del’s decisions have unimaginable consequences and, as she begins to fall for the Echo Simons in each world, she draws closer to a truth that the Council of Walkers is trying to hide ~ a secret that threatens the fate of the entire multiverse.

My Rating System

I know some of you might be curious as to what my rating system is. Well, I will explain it to you.

I rate on whole marks, not half marks like a lot of blogs do. I used to rate on half marks (and might go back to it soon) but found it was a little easier with the whole marks.

I rate the books on story, characters, writer's ability and cover art. Like recently I read a book that I couldn't force myself to finish reading because I was so utterly confused about the direction of the story and what it was about. I would normally have given it only one butterfly mark, but since I enjoyed the characters and the cover I gave it two butterfly marks.

{Review} Chime by Franny Billingsley

Title: Chime
Author: Franny Billingsley
Publisher: Speak
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Witches
Release Date: April 12th 2012
Source: Won from Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon | TBD

Briony has a secret. It is a secret that killed her stepmother, ruined her sister's mind, and will end her life, if anyone were to know. She has powers. Then Eldric comes along with his golden lion eyes and a great mane of tawny hair. He is as natural as the sun, and he treats her as if she is extraordinary. And everything starts to change . . . Chime is a haunting, brilliantly written novel that will stay with you--its magic, its romance, its world like none other.
This book is totally not what I expected, and I don't mean that in a good way this time.  I couldn't finish this book and put it down and walked away at chapter 10.

Briony feels as if her Stepmother's death is her fault, that her sister's child-like mind is her fault and she doesn't want to be what she is, a witch. All that is what pulled me into the book. It sounded very interesting. But when I started to read it, I was totally lost, didn't understand what was going on or what time period we were in. When I'm reading a book I like to know what time period it takes place in, especially since it has to do with witches. Are we talking about witches from the 1700's or modern day witches or futuristic witches? They way they talked made it sound like older witches but then there was talk about "Bible Balls" and that made me think dystopian.

The story had you curious about everything. Briony was talking about how she was like a wolfchild and then a witch. She could also hear spirits. It was confusing to me.

The characters were decent enough. I really did like Briony and Eldric. They seem like they would make a cute enough couple too. Even Rose with her child-like mind was favorable. The rest of the characters were alright as well.

To me this book should be rated at a one. But because I liked the characters and the book cover was attractive, I gave it two butterflies. If anyone is brave enough to attempt reading this then I would recommend this to anyone 15 and older.

{Review} Rose by Holly Webb

Title: Rose
Author: Holly Webb
Publisher: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Genre: Children, Magic, Supernatural
Release Date: Sept 3rd 2013
Source: Publisher for book tour
Purchase: Amazon/TBD

Rose isn't like the other orphans at St Bridget's Home for Abandoned Girls. Instead of dreaming of getting adopted by loving, wealthy parents, Rose wants to get a job and be independent. She doesn't need anyone but herself. She finds her escape working as a maid for Mr. Fountain, an alchemist. Unable to ignore the magic that flows throughout the grand residence, Rose realizes that just maybe; she might have a little bit of magic in her too. This new series featuring magicians, witches, talking cats, mist-monsters, and friendships will have young readers in a trance!
What a wonderfully written children’s book! It read like Annie (the movie) and Harry Potter all into one story. From the moment you stepped into Rose’s life you were automatically taken away and on a journey of self discovery.

This was a very compelling story. I loved how the characters were of different lifestyles. From the rich to the poor orphans and Magicians to normal people. It also helps that if you read this with the British dialect in mind.

I really liked the relationship between Rose and her friend Maisie. I just could picture Maisie as a very small and petite child, soft spoken and afraid. Their friendship was very strong and very special.

Rose had also bonded with a fellow orphan, Bill, who was also employed at the Fountain residence. I would love to know what became of their friendship and the un-seemingly odd friendship she had made with Freddie, an apprentice of Mr. Fountain’s. The characters were very well written and very well imaginable. I had no difficulties picturing what each character was like in my head.

I especially loved the story. I am always pulled into stories that have to do with magical things. And with this being tailored towards middle-grade, I had no problem with reading it to my four year old and she absolutely loved it. Webb has a gift for writing stories and I cannot wait to read the next book in this series, Rose and the LostPrincess.

Follow Friday {17}

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted

Book Selfie! Take a pic with your current read.
So this one was a tough one for me because I despise having my picture taken. Haha. My current read, if you can't see it in the picture is Chime by Franny Billingsley.

Next week:
If you could only have ONE – one book – for the rest of your life. Don’t cheat…what would it be?

A to Z Survey

So, I've been seeing these everywhere and decided it was my turn to do one, yay!

Author You’ve Read the Most Books From:

There has been several that are about tied. But right now it would probably be Cassandra Clare, I've read both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series.

Best Sequel Ever:

Again, that is probably a tie. While most people say Harry Potter (which is ranking up there for me), I would have to say either The Iron Daughter or Clockwork Prince

Currently Reading:

Chime by Franny Billingsley

Drink of Choice While Reading:

Iced Tea, it's what I always drink

E-reader or Physical Book?

Definitely a physical book. There is nothing like the feel of a real book in your hands. The screens on the E-readers hurt my eyes.

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated in High School:

Well, I've always liked bad boys or jerks (true story), so maybe Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices or if I wanted to go with someone with more class and different standards that wasn't a bad boy, I would say, Mr Darcy of Pride & Prejudice.

Glad You Gave This Book a Chance:

Fracture by Megan Miranda. It wasn't at all what I expected. I thought that it would be dull but it turned out to be an amazing read!

Hidden Gem Book:

Rose by Holly Webb. A very cute book for middle-grade. It's a twist between Harry Potter and Annie.

Important Moment in Your Reading Life:

That would have to be when I was little and I first learned how to read, duh! Haha

Just Finished:

Haunting Violet by Alyxandra Harvey

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

Anything sexual or of gay or lesbian natures. I tend to try to stick to strictly children's, middle grade and young adult and any sub-genre of those categories.

Longest Book You’ve Read:

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer at 756 pages

Major Book Hangover Because Of:

Not sure...

Number of Bookcases You Own:

Three. One in my bedroom that has all the books that I have yet to read. Two in the living room, one that has my books series on it and the other of all the other books I have read. Will have to get another one soon since they are filling up rather quickly.

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

Twilight.

Preferred Place to Read:

In my bed with peace and quiet. Love to snuggle up under the covers and get lost in my books :)

Reading Regret:

That I never finished my Harry Potter series and that I watched the TV show of Pretty Little Liars before I read the books.

Series You Started and Need to Finish:

Pretty Little Liars, Harry Potter, The Infernal Devices, Carrier (Leigh Fallon) and Shadow Falls (C.C. Hunter)

Three of Your All-Time Favorite Books:

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Unapologetic Fangirl for:

Hmmm, not sure.....

Very Excited for This Release More Than All the Others:

Mistwalker by Saundra Mitchell

Worst Bookish Habit:

Sometimes I snack while I'm reading.

X Marks the Spot (Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book):

On my TBR shelf it's Tangled by Erica O'Rourke. My series shelf it's Fallen In Love by Lauren Kate. On my regular shelf it's Queen of the Dead by Stacey Kade.

Your Latest Book Purchase:

Haven't been able to get out to purchase a new one yet, but hopefully will this weekend :)

ZZZ-Snatcher Book (Last Book That Kept You Up Way Late):

All my books keep me up WAY too late. It's the only time I get my quiet 'me' time. So the last book that I read was Haunting Violet, I stayed up until 3:30am reading it.

{Review} Haunting Violet by Alyxandra Harvey

Title: Haunting Violet
Author: Alyxandra Harvey
Publisher: Walker Children's
Genre: Young Adult, Ghosts, Mystery
Release Date: June 21st 2011
Source: from publisher for review
Purchase: TBD/Amazon

Violet Willoughby doesn't believe in ghosts. But they believe in her. Now that she is being haunted by the ghost of a young woman, Violet can no longer ignore her unique ability. She must discover the mystery behind this girl's violent death, to prevent the ghost's twin sister from suffering the same fate. Fans of Alyx Harvey are in for a treat with this tale of unsolved murder and forbidden romance within the confines of Victorian high society.
This was a hauntingly romantic, witty and excitement filled paranormal novel. It was a hard one to put down as I started to read and get entranced into this world set in the late 1800’s. I have always been a fan of the era and this really brought me close to it with the way that Harvey wrote each character and developed the story.

Violet is trapped by her loyalty to her mother and the fact that she is only sixteen years old. She doesn’t believe in spirits, which is her mother’s occupation as a fake spiritualist, but it doesn’t mean the spirits don’t believe in her. Should she embrace her gift or run from it? Well, you soon find out once you become so engulfed in this spectacular novel.

The characters were amazing, Violet was written wonderfully and the reader really felt connected to her. I just can’t imagine a world where you are betrothed to be married at sixteen, or even hoping to be married at that age.

I especially liked Colin. And even Elizabeth. Colin was a rugged type of Irishman, and just imagining his accent while he talked was amazing. I love the Irish accent. But that’s not all he has going for him. While I am a sucker for a “bad boy”, I really enjoyed the change of pace with Colin. He had a heart of gold, always looking out for Violet, ever since they were young.  I just pictured him with the boyish charm and babyface.

Elizabeth was great. She was fun and bold and daring. But when it came to boys, mainly Frederic, she was positively head over heals and giddy. She is definitely a true friend, even when Violet thought there was no one left that would trust her, Elizabeth came through.

I would have normally gave this one five stars, but I’m actually giving it four. I just felt as if this story was lacking something more. I would recommend this to anyone ages 14 and older.

Top Ten Tuesday #TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join.

This week they ask:
Top ten things that make my life as a reader/book blogger easier
(I could only think of four)

1. Goodreads - without that, I wouldn't discover new books or recommendations
2. Amazon/B&N - helps me find the new up-coming releases
3. Publishers - without them, I wouldn't get so many amazing ARCs to review on here
4. Various blog meme's - helps me to post every day and every week when I don't have anything else to post
5. The Library - even though my library is quite small and barely has a YA section to look through, they are still very helpful and usually order the books that I request.

TBR Jar

So, I decided to break down and follow the trend of the TBR Jar. It really is a great way to figure out what your next book to read is when you have so many to choose from. This is also a fun little project that I decided to do with my daughter. I let her pick out the next book by letting her stick her hand in the jar and swirling around the many pieces of paper and picking out that one lucky book. My jar is far from pretty right now and it still actually smells like pickles at the moment (which my daughter doesn't mind ). We are going to paint it later and make it look much, much prettier. Here is what we picked out for me to read...

Also, if you haven't noticed yet, I have been participating in more and more blog tours for some pretty great books and more of those are sure to come here. I will also be participating in the Spooktacular Giveaway Hop hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer. I haven't been able to participate in many giveaways this year, but I'm hoping that will change soon.

There will also be another weekly post on here coming Thursdays, possibly on Saturdays. I want to start a special weekly post about getting to know me, not only as a blogger, but me personally. I've been told in the past that I should reach out more and connect with my readers and let them get to know me. So I will take you into my weekly life and post pictures of what we (my daughter and I) did for the week. Whether it's book related or not. And since I'm having a hard time getting the children's book blog off the ground like planned, I will more than likely be posting some book reviews here in the children genre.

I am also hoping to have some guest bloggers/reviewers on here. If you would like to participate in this, please email me (under the contacts tab) and we can work on getting your reviews on here as well. I'm hoping to have another form put together for that. I also want to start up the book chain that I had talked about in the past where I send out a book for you to read and you send it to the next person and so on.

Well, I guess that's it for now. Happy reading everyone!

Follow Friday [16]

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted

Share something you’ve learned about book blogging or just blogging in general in the last month.
Well, to be honest, I have been blogging since October of 2011 and I am always learning something new. Recently I have learned to have a bit more fun with reviews, mine used to be so robotic like until I started reading some other reviews on Goodreads and other book blogs, and I was all like "Hey, I can write like that", and so I started to have more fun with my reviews, opening up more, instead of giving summaries of the books, I just started to run with it. Now my reviews aren't all 'blah blah' boring anymore.

There's a girl who could throw herself head first into life and forge an unbreakable name, an identity that stands on its own without fathers or brothers or lovers who devour and shatter.

I'VE NEVER BEEN THAT GIRL.

Sixteen-year-old Ophelia Castellan will never be just another girl at Elsinore Academy. Seeing ghosts is not a skill prized in future society wives. Even when she takes her pills, the bean sidhe beckon, reminding her of a promise to her dead mother.

Now, in the wake of the Headmaster's sudden death, the whole academy is in turmoil, and Ophelia can no longer ignore the fae. Especially once she starts seeing the Headmaster's ghosts- two of them- on the school grounds.

At the center of her crumbling world is Dane, the Headmaster's grieving son. He, too, understands the power of a promise to a parent- even a dead one. To him, Ophelia is the only person not tainted by deceit and hypocrisy, a mirror of his own broken soul. And to Ophelia, Dane quickly becomes everything. Yet even as she gives more of herself to him, Dane slips away. Consumed by suspicion, rage, and madness, he spirals towards his tragic fate- dragging Ophelia, and the rest of Elsinore, with him.

YOU KNOW HOW THIS STORY ENDS.

Yet even in the face of certain death, Ophelia has a choice to make- and a promise to keep. She is not the girl others want her to be. But in Dot Hutchison's dark and sensuous debut novel, the name "Ophelia" is as deeply, painfully, tragically real as "Hamlet"

{Review} Supernaturally by Kiersten White

Title: Supernaturally (Paranormalcy #2)
Author: Kiersten White
Publisher: HarperTeen
Genre: Young Adult, Urban Fantasy
Release Date: July 26th 2012

Purchase: TBD | Amazon

Evie finally has the normal life she's always longed for, but she's shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. So when she's given the opportunity to work for the International Paranormal Containment Agency again, she leaps at the chance.

But then Evie's faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears, and tells her that a battle is brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole paranormal world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.
Such a wonderful follow up to Paranormalcy (my review)! The characters remained amazing as did the story. And, I was hoping for more information about Evie, and I finally learned a few things about her. So very pleased!

Evie learns some new things about herself and the ones around her. We see a little more of the Faerie Realms as well as some other paranormals. This second novel was not at all what I had expected. The ride just kept going.

White also introduced us to a new character, Jack, who is a human that can travel by Faerie Path. He's rather a questionable character at first and remains questionable throughout the course of this second installment. It leaves you to wonder if we will see more of him in the 3rd book, Endlessly.

As for Lend and Evie and the rest of the gang, they were still amazing. The reader had a chance to hear more about Arianna and what happened to her and her creator. We learn how vampires were created and about Evie's family. We also see a little of Evie's high school life and her torment about not being able to be with Lend.

I really thoroughly enjoyed this book and still recommend this series to anyone 13 and older.
