{Review} Fablehaven by Brandon Mull

Title: Fablehaven (Fablehave #1)
Author: Brandon Mull
Publisher: Aladdin
Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy
Release Date: April 24th, 2007
Source: Purchased

For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic in a cynical world. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite ... Kendra and her brother Seth have no idea their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws give relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, an arcane evil is unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save her family, Fablehaven, and perhaps the world, Kendra must find the courage to do what she fears most.

Fablehaven was a very interesting read. I absolutely LOVE fantasy books. I love the aspect of different creatures and different worlds other then our own. When I saw this series box set sitting on the shelf at Sam's Club (yes, Sam's Club), I just knew I needed to check it out. The covers were so pretty and enchanting. However, the series has been sitting on my book shelf collecting dust since last year when I purchased them. That's when I decided, even though I have all these other books sitting around waiting to be read, that I needed to start this one.

The story was pretty great. It started off by two siblings, Kendra and Seth, taking a trip to their grandparents house, to grandparents they barely knew to spend 14 long days with them while their parents went on a cruise. They really didn't want to go and even when they got there they felt alienated by their grandfather and were technically locked away inside an attic nursery and told they couldn't do a whole lot. Seth is the adventurous type who does the opposite of what people tell him, even if it does get him into trouble. And soon they are off on an adventure and experiencing things they never thought existed except for in fairy tales.

This is rated more towards a Middle-grade type audience, but some of the words were just too big for a middle grade reader to understand in my opinion without having to look them up in the dictionary or just guess what they said and meant. Even my eleven year old neighbor was left scratching her head to some of the words. Also, Mull had a habit of overly describing everything, which, to me, made it a little more dull and seemed to drag certain points of the book out.

This is a magical first book to the Fablehaven series.  I hope the rest of the series is just as magical as the first. I would recommend this book for ages 14 and older due to bigger and more difficult words.

Features on Jump Into Books

So, I have decided on trying to get the blog together a little more. I'm going to try to do a daily blog meme. It's going to take me a little time to adjust to this, but I think it will be well worth it in the end. Here is what my line up will look like as of now, I might tweak it a little later.

Monday - What I'm reading - Will consist on what I'm reading for that week, such as about the author, about the book, the book cover, etc

Tuesday - Top Ten Tuesday - Weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, each week is a new Top Ten list.

Wednesday - Waiting on Wednesday - Weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine, where we spotlight the books we are eagerly awaiting to hit the shelves.

Wishlist Wednesday - Weekly meme hosted by Pen to Paper, where we post about one book that has been on our wishlists for a while.

Thursday - Chapter Sampler Thursday - I will be posting chapter samplers as they are available to read of new and upcoming books.

Friday - Feature & Follow Friday - Weekly meme hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee's View. It allows readers to read a little bit about you and helps you acquire new followers/friends.

Saturday - Open

Sunday - New Release Sunday - Every week I will try to post the new Young Adult, Middle Grade and Children's books publishing for the week

End of the Month - Stacking the Shelves - (formerly In My Mailbox) I will post on the last day of every month my book haul for the month. Since I don't get books every week, I figured this is the best way to do it.

{Review} The Académie by Susanne Dunlap

Title: The Académie
Author: Susanne Dunlap
Publisher: Bloomsbury Children's
Genre: Young Adult, Historical Fiction
Release Date: February 28th 2012
Source: Publisher for Review
Purchase: Amazon | TBD | Kobo | B&N

Eliza Monroe-daughter of the future president of the United States-is devastated when her mother decides to send her to boarding school outside of Paris. But the young American teen is quickly reconciled to the idea when-ooh, la-la!-she discovers who her fellow pupils will be: Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of Josephine Bonaparte; and Caroline Bonaparte, youngest sister of the famous French general. It doesn't take long for Eliza to figure out that the two French girls are mortal enemies-and that she's about to get caught in the middle of their schemes.
The Académie was a great book. It was my second attempt to reading it, and I’m glad that I did. It had French history and a little romance and an ending that I honestly didn’t see coming. I had pictured the ending going in a different direction then what it did. I really enjoy endings that take a different direction than what you expect, because, let’s face it, who likes to be able to know exactly what is going to happen.

This story revolves around three girls lives, Eliza, Hortense and Madeleine. Eliza Monroe is daughter of future president James Monroe and is sent to a French boarding school in Paris. There she encounters the beautiful and reserved Hortense de Beauharnais, step-daughter to Napoléon Bonaparte and Caroline Bonaparte, sister to Napoléon Bonaparte, who will stop at nothing to separate her brother from Hortense’s mother, Josephine.

Eliza is the type of girl who wants to fit in. She soon finds herself in the middle of a feud between Caroline and Hortense. But still so desperately seeks the approval of her new friends. She also believes that she is in love with Eugene, Hortense brother. Only to find out he is in love with Madeleine, an actress’s daughter. She so desperately wants him to notice her that she does the unthinkable to be close to him.

The characters are just simply amazing. The story was also amazing. Dunlap brought history to the 21st century in this great book. It has a great story with a great ending that is sure to please. My next read by her is In the Shadow of the Lamp, can’t wait to dive it.

I’m not sure who to tell you about here because I’m actually two people rolled into one. As a responsible mother of teens, I show one persona to the world. That person is driven, conservative and level headed. But the other part of me just never grew up. She is rebellious, impulsive and curious.
It’s hard being both these people. They’re often at odds.
The mother part of me knows I should put a cap on how many animals we take in. The teen part of me wants to save them all. We have five cats and two dogs. Who do you think is winning?
Even now. The mother part wants to make a meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and a tossed salad. The teen part wants to order a pizza, work on my website and check my Facebook.
Luckily, though my two halves don’t always agree, both of us live happily in Portland, Oregon, with a husband and too many animals. And we both love to write and write and write..

[Review] The Dollhouse Asylum by Mary Gray

Title: The Dollhouse Asylum
Author: Mary Gray
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Genre: Dystopia, YA
Release Date: October 22nd 2013
Source: Publisher for Review
Purchase: Amazon | Kobo | B&N
A virus that had once been contained has returned, and soon no place will be left untouched by its destruction. But when Cheyenne wakes up in Elysian Fields--a subdivision cut off from the world and its monster-creating virus--she is thrilled to have a chance at survival.

At first, Elysian Fields, with its beautiful houses and manicured lawns, is perfect. Teo Richardson, the older man who stole Cheyenne's heart, built it so they could be together. But when Teo tells Cheyenne there are tests that she and seven other couples must pass to be worthy of salvation, Cheyenne begins to question the perfection of his world.

The people they were before are gone. Cheyenne is now "Persephone," and each couple has been re-named to reflect the most tragic romances ever told. Everyone is fighting to pass the test, to remain in Elysian Fields. Teo dresses them up, tells them when to move and how to act, and in order to pass the test, they must play along.

If they play it right, then they'll be safe.

But if they play it wrong, they'll die.
The Dollhouse Asylum was riveting read. I don't normally read too much Dystopian anymore, but this one had me engrossed from the beginning straight on through until the end. It read like a movie that was unfolding in front of you. I had no problem picturing everything, from the characters, to the homes and scenery, right down to what they were wearing.

Cheyenne, was the new girl at school, just trying to blend in, when one day she is noticed by someone that she never expected to notice her. She slowly started to come out of her shell and open up to this person, little did she know things would soon change forever.

The characters were memorable, as was the story. Teo had a really bad God complex when it came to his compound that he created and for the people in it. He had some major psychological and control issues. But I won't go into too much more because that would spoil it for everyone that hasn't read it yet. *wink*

As for the story, it was very strong and believable, however, about halfway through I suspected that things weren't as they seemed and turned out to be right in the end. But overall, this was an excellent book by first time author, Mary Gray. I cannot wait to read future books by this amazing author!

Recommended for ages 14 and up.

World War III has left the world ravaged by nuclear radiation. A lucky few escaped to the Alaskan wilderness. They’ve survived for the last thirty years by living off the land, being one with nature, and hiding from whoever else might still be out there.

At least, this is what Juneau has been told her entire life.

When Juneau returns from a hunting trip to discover that everyone in her clan has vanished, she sets off to find them. Leaving the boundaries of their land for the very first time, she learns something horrifying: There never was a war. Cities were never destroyed. The world is intact. Everything was a lie.

Now Juneau is adrift in a modern-day world she never knew existed. But while she’s trying to find a way to rescue her friends and family, someone else is looking for her. Someone who knows the extraordinary truth about the secrets of her past.

Now I will admit, I'm not big into Dystopian novels, but this one has intrigued me.
