Genre: YA, Historial Fiction, Horror
Release Date: January 29, 2013

In the darkest places, even love is deadly.

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Book Review
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome of this book. I wished that I had read the original book by H.G. Wells, The Island of Dr. Moreau, I did, however, watch the movie staring Val Kilmer, but it was such a long time ago, that I don’t remember much of it.

The characters of the book, you either loved them, hated them or just flat out didn’t trust them. I immediately disliked Dr. Moreau, he was rude, arrogant and had no emotional attachment to his own daughter, Juliet. He treated her like she was a nuisance. Always trying to order her around and assuming his fatherly role after years of being MIA.

Montgomery wasn’t quite a gentleman, but he still had that air about him. You immediately like him right off, he seems very up front, even though he does hide what Juliet’s father does. But he does everything because he deeply cares. Whereas Edward, on the other hand, just seems sneaky right off the bat. I never did trust him. He seemed to always be hiding something and wasn’t always honest.

I did like Juliet’s character. She always seemed to be optimistic. Always giving the benefit of the doubt, even when she shouldn’t. She was tough, only because she had to become that way after her father’s crimes. She could take care of herself but always wanted someone there for her. She took a lot of crap from her father’s crimes and then from her father once she reached the island, but yet, never gave up. I admire her for that.

The story was fascinating. I was really not expecting the ending and who the “culprit” was. I actually shed a tear or two with the ending because it was very unexpected. So I’m hoping that I can get some resolve in the next book.

Influenster VoxBox and Sally Hansen #CSMTKO

Ok, so I normally only blog about books and book related things on here. But I wanted to talk about the VoxBox I got in the mail from Influenster and Sally Hansen recently.

I recently got the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure voxbox in the mail. (I don't have the pictures of it right off hand, sorry.) It had come with 3 different colors, Red My Lips, Pat on the Black and Jaded. These are 7-in-1 colors, meaning they are:

  • Base Coat
  • Strengthener
  • Growth Treatment
  • Color
  • Top Coat
  • Chip Resistant
  • Gel Shine

I had tried the Jaded color. I absolutely LOVED it. Normally it takes about 3 or 4 coats to give my nails an awesome look, but after about 2 or 3 coats, my nails looked great.

This is my nails after 2 coats (excuse my poor looking hand). This stuff really lasted. Normally after putting on nail polish and it dries you go about your daily chores and 9 times out of 10, by the end of the day, the nail polish has been chipped off or worn off and looks horrible. But by the end of one week my nails still looked great with very minimal chipping. Needless to say, I absolutely love this stuff and am going to buy more colors!

Ok, so now we can get back to books! Haha.

[News] I'm Moving...

Well, it's that time again. I'm am moving. But don't worry, I'm not moving websites or anything like that. I'm am once again packing up my entire apartment and moving across state lines, back to Louisiana. I haven't moved in 2 years. The last time I did it, it was under horrible circumstances. I had moved from Louisiana back home to Michigan for 2 months after my fiance and I decided to call it quits (or rather he decided to call it quits). I made the trek back down south and moved in with my friend in Mississippi in March of 2012. While here, I had made some great friends (who I will miss very much) and found out who enjoyed using me and stabbing me in the back.

I feel this move will be good for my daughter and myself. We will be closer to her daddy, which it will make it easier on us to get her back and forth. There are also JOBS out there! I have been living in the town I live in with no work for the past 2 years living off of my child support and living with my mom. But when I move, I have a job waiting for me and a house and my ex's family who is willing to help me out. So things are looking up for us finally.

And it will be looking up here on the blog too. I will be hosting more giveaways with my reviews and so much more. So look out for some ARC giveaways to come with my reviews, they will be held for US residents. Also, I do have a donate button on the blog if you would like to donate. All donations go to help fund International giveaways.

The move date for us is set for the weekend just after Valentine's Day. So the blog will be shut down for a maximum of 2 weeks. I will have some automatic posts going up more then likely, but I will not directly post myself unless I'm back from the move.

Happy Reading!

[Review] Born of Illusion by Teri Brown

Title: Born of Illusion
Author: Teri Brown
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Genre: Historical Fiction, Young Adult
Release Date: June 11, 2013
Source: YABE
Purchase: Amazon | TBD | Kobo | B&N

Anna Van Housen has a secret.

A gifted illusionist, Anna assists her mother, the renowned medium Marguerite Van Housen, in her stage show and séances, easily navigating the underground world of magicians, mediums, and mentalists in 1920’s New York. As the illegitimate daughter of Harry Houdini—or so Marguerite claims—sleight of hand illusions have never been a challenge for Anna. The real trick is keeping her own gifts secret from her opportunistic mother. Because while Marguerite’s own powers may be a sham, Anna possesses a true ability to sense people’s feelings and foretell the future.

But as Anna’s powers intensify, she begins to experience frightening visions of her mother in peril, which leads her to explore the powers she’s tried so long to hide. And when a mysterious young man named Cole moves into the flat downstairs, introducing Anna to a secret society that studies people with gifts like hers, she is forced to confront her past and rethink everything she’s ever known. Is her mother truly in danger, or are Anna’s visions merely illusion? And could the great Houdini really be her father, or is it just another of Marguerite’s tricks?
What did I think of Born of Illusion? Well, for starters, it was hard for me to get into at first. It took me over 100 pages before I started to really like it and not want to put it down. It seemed to just drag on and on at first. It was also predictable. Once you started to get into it, you start to realize who is true and a friend and who is the "bad guy". You also find out about things pretty late in the book.

But even with that being said, I really did enjoy it. I thought it was quite interesting to read about an illegitimate daughter of the famed Houdini. It's not very often you read about him in anything. I actually really don't know much about him except that he was a really great magician. This book made me want to find out more about him (I think I might look him up on Wiki).

The story was pretty good as well, once it finally started to pick up pace and keep me interested. I enjoyed Anna's abilities or feeling others emotions and the visions she would get. I have always been fascinated by the aspect of psychic abilities. I used to be envious of people that had them (I know, pretty lame haha).

I did enjoy Anna's character, flaws and all. She was tired of being her mother's lackey, tired of her mother being jealous of her and wanting to get out. I don't blame her. Anna was a strong willed individual and very stubborn. I enjoy stubbornness to a point, and Brown did not push her over the edge with that.

Cole was quite the mysterious guy. I love mysteriousness. It keeps you guessing and wanting more. I think every good book needs someone mysterious.

I do recommend this book to anyone who likes magic and psychic abilities. I'm eagerly anticipating the next book, Born of Deception. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Anna and Cole.

Waiting on Wednesday #WoW @Sa11eGreen #VikingJuvenile @penguinusa

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It's to spotlight upcoming reads which I can't wait to get my hands on.

This week my book is:
Half Bad by Sally Green
Release date: March 4th 2014

Pre-order your copy today:
Amazon | TBD | Kobo | B&N

In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and fifteen-year-old Nathan, who is both. Nathan’s father is the world’s most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides. Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his sixteenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch—or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust—not even family, not even the girl he loves?

In the tradition of Patrick Ness and Markus Zusak, Half Bad is a gripping tale of alienation and the indomitable will to survive, a story that will grab hold of you and not let go until the very last page.

The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanna Wiebe

Title: The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant
Author: Joanna Wiebe
Publisher: BenBella Books
Genre: YA, Mystery, Paranormal
Release Date: Jan 14th 2014
Source: Publisher
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | Kobo

So many secrets for such a small island. From the moment Anne Merchant arrives at Cania Christy, a boarding school for the world’s wealthiest teens, the hushed truths of this strange, unfamiliar land begin calling to her—sometimes as lulling drumbeats in the night, sometimes as piercing shrieks.

One by one, unanswered questions rise. No one will tell her why a line is painted across the island or why she is forbidden to cross it. Her every move—even her performance at the school dance—is graded as part of a competition to become valedictorian, a title that brings rewards no one will talk about. And Anne discovers that the parents of her peers surrender million-dollar possessions to enroll their kids in Cania Christy, leaving her to wonder what her lowly funeral director father could have paid to get her in… and why.

As a beautiful senior struggles to help Anne make sense of this cloak-and-dagger world without breaking the rules that bind him, she must summon the courage to face the impossible truth—and change it—before she and everyone she loves is destroyed by it.
Oh. My. God! This book was totally amazingly awesome! I will admit, at first, it really mad me irritated how everyone was acting and treating Anne. I was so mad that I found myself yelling at the book at times! But it was so phenomenal that it had me second guessing everything. Usually I can figure out where a book is going and what is going to happen, especially with mysteries, but this one had such an awesome plot twist that it totally threw me off!

I really enjoyed Anne's character. She was always trying to figure things out but still couldn't see what was right in front of her. She was kind of irritating at times, especially with the more obvious situations, but she was a very strong individual and never gave up on anything.

Ben was a mystery. Hot one minute, cold the next. He seemed like he was hiding something every time you turn around. Always cryptic. I think that is what drew me to him, I am a fan of the mysterious ones, I enjoy trying to figure them out.

Pilot was charming. He was so charming that you knew that there was something off about him. He was also very secretive, but enjoyed living life. He really opened up Anne. I think in a way he was good for her.

The story, as mentioned above, was a total shocker. When you first start reading this and you see how the people treat Anne, you would start to think that she was a pariah. But as the story unfolds into more mysteries, you start to change your point of view on things and start thinking something totally different. This one will keep you on your toes. And with the cliff-hanger ending, you will be screaming for more!

Top Ten Tuesday #TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join.

This week they ask:
Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist (if you could make authors write about these things you would. Could be a specific type of character, an issue tackled, a time period, a certain plot, etc.)

So this one was a little more difficult for me, I only came up with four this week.

1. 1800’s Ireland – I read so much about that era but it’s always about England or America and recently France and Italy. I want to read something about Ireland. It’s such a gorgeous country and I would love to read about it with the Victorian Era.
2. Human/Faerie – I’ve been tossing around ideas for a new book that I want to try to write, but I have such a hard time writing it myself. Maybe read about a human going into the faerie realm and kidnapping a faerie child and raising it as their own but have to deal with the consequences of their actions, thus starting a war.
3. Love Triangle Reversed – You always read about love triangles where the girl is torn between 2 awesomely hot guys, but you never read about a guy torn between 2 beautiful girls, would love to read something like that instead.
4. Human/Animal Love Story – A little boy/girl (or even a teen) has a pet and they are granted one wish and wish that their pet was human. Once their wish is granted they end up becoming better friends and eventually fall in love. (my neighbor came up with this one, sounds pretty interesting)

Blog Tour + Giveaway:The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanna Wiebe

Welcome to my tour stop for The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanne Wiebe! Hosted by Kismet Blog Tours! Joanna Wiebe stopped by today to discuss Prologues, so make sure you check that out and we also have a wonderfully awesome giveaway! I will tell you, this book was totally awesome and I can't wait to share my review with you, but I am, haha. I will be posting the review to this amazingly awesome book on the 21st (tomorrow) so check back for that!

After her mother’s death, 16-year-old art prodigy Anne Merchant moves from sunny California to the cold woodlands of Wormwood Island, Maine for what is supposed to be a fresh start. She is the newest student of Cania Christy, an elite boarding school that is as filled with secrets as it is with the world’s most privileged—and competitive—teens.

From the first day of school, Anne finds herself thrust into the Big V competition, an intense race to the top of the class. With enviable talents, she quickly becomes the enemy of every junior seeking the Big V—especially Harper, the presumed frontrunner.

Like every student, she is assigned a guardian, and a unique mission. Anne’s assignment is to “look deeper.” Anne is determined to succeed, and won’t let anything —not even her distractingly beautiful neighbor Ben—get in the way. But the deeper she looks the more questions arise, and the more she is forced to reexamine all of her assumptions—about the school, her classmates and even herself.

As layers of secrecy deepen, Anne leans on the friendship of Molly, a lifelong islander, and Pilot, the only junior not competing for the Big V, to make sense of this cloak-and-dagger world. But when people start disappearing, Anne uncovers a stunning truth that she must face head on—before she and everyone she loves is destroyed by it.

My Series Banners

So I normally get my series banners from I'm Loving Books. But I noticed she just seems so overwhelmed over there that I thought about making a few of my own. Feel free to take them and post them on your own blog.

I don't have the codes for these. As I read more series that I like and if Sarah doesn't have the banners, I will probably make some more.

Unbreakable by Kami Garcia

Title: Unbreakable (The Legion #1)
Author: Kami Garcia
Publisher: Little, Brown Books
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Horror
Release Date: October 1, 2013
Source: YABE
Purchase: Amazon | TBD | B&N | Kobo

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

This book was absolutely, without a doubt, one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I finished this one in a day! It normally takes me at least 3 or 4 days to finish reading one, depending on how busy I find myself, but I just couldn't put this down.

This book read a lot like Supernatural, you know, the TV show with the ruggedly handsome Dean and his equally handsome brother, Sam? OMG, totally worth the read. But instead of Dean and Sam, you have Jared and Lukas, two totally handsome and swoon worthy guys. So with them and the ghosts and demons of this book, I definitely had to say, "yes please!".

Kennedy is a very strong individual who has taken on a lot since her father walked out on her and her mom, and then later, maybe 10 years, her mother dies. And, instead of going to the boarding school her aunt wants to send her to, she decides to go on the run once her life is threatened by a vengeance spirit. But she doesn't go alone, she goes with Jared and Lukas and gets caught up in their world.

This book is filled with excitement, horror, romance and just awesomeness! Garcia takes you on one heck of a thrill ride with this one and her writing technique is nothing short of amazing! I am always happy with whatever I read of hers and I can't wait for the next book to come out!
