Guest Blog Post: Author Graham J. Sharpe

This is the first Guest Blog Post that I have hosted on here and I'm super happy. I have heard great things about Graham J. Sharpe's debut novel, Purple, and I can't wait to read it....

The Writing Process
Graham J. Sharpe

I think any writer would be lying if they told you that writing is easy. For me, it was a really long process. School was never my thing. I was bullied because I’m gay, and eventually I dropped out because fellow students could not accept me for who I was. Besides being bullied, I really hated the classroom environment. It took me a while to figure out that it wasn’t writing that I disliked but rather the idea of having someone tell me what to do.

One day I was talking to a friend and I realized that I had a good idea for a story. At that point I had taken a few creative writing courses, but didn’t have a college degree. I really didn’t think I had any business writing a book, but eventually I decided to go for it.

It took me a few years to write Purple. When I’m not writing I work as a flight attendant and combine travel with writing. I completed my first novel during the sleepless, jet-lagged hours spent in hotel rooms around the world. In the early days I wrote Purple on a notebook and had a friend type it out. I would write a little, put it away and then randomly start again.

I didn’t have a plan. In the beginning I didn’t even know who I was writing for. At first I thought it might be a short story for nine-year-old kids, but then the plot developed. I quickly realized that some of the main themes in Purple - bullying, friendship, trusting our intuition and dealing with loss - would appeal to an older demographic. After about three years I started writing more seriously. After two more years I finished the book.

I started to look for a literary agent and was referred to a London-based literary consultancy called Cornerstones. I wanted some feedback and I think that’s one of the biggest things new authors have to get over. It’s very scary at first to have someone read your work, but it really is important that you have an outsider look over it. Cornerstones read the entire manuscript and told me it had potential but needed some editing. I spent a further eighteen months rewriting.

I met an artist through another friend and she had some fantastic ideas for the cover. At that point I thought, “Well, maybe I ought to just publish it on my own.” So that’s what I did. Last September I published Purple as an eBook on Amazon, and I couldn’t be happier with where the book is today.

I think the most important thing that new writers need to remember is not to get discouraged. Take a break when you need one, have fun with the writing process and don’t give yourself a deadline. Creativity has to take its own course. Take your time and the words will come.

About the Author:

At the age of 12, author Graham Sharpe regularly danced around the lounge to Kate Bush's “Wuthering Heights.” Today, he still hasn't decided what he'll do when he grows up. So far, the East Sussex, England-based writer has worked in an ice cream shop, trained as a hairdresser, studied sociology and psychology, written for and performed with a touring theatre company, and backpacked across far-flung countries with loose change in his pocket. Graham now combines travelling with writing and he completed his first novel, Purple, during the sleepless, jet-lagged hours spent in hotel rooms around the world.

To Be Read Books

I've decided to start a weekly posting for my never-ending list of TBR books. I'm not sure if any other blogs have started a topic like this. I just thought it would be fun.

This week I'm featuring Purple by Graham J. Sharpe. It's his debut novel that was released in paperback and ebook format in September of this year. It also was a finalist in the Kindle book review's Best Indie Books of 2012.

After a purple storm sweeps around Planet Earth, stealing millions of people, four teenagers struggle to make it alone in London.

Drawn together by a series of bizarre coincidences, Ellie, Midge, Scott and Marty soon find themselves entangled with a bunch of interfering pensioners. Among the cast of players are flamboyant hairdresser Mr Rupert, Pearl the loud-mouthed tea lady, and June, a psychic, who travels the world on her motorbike.

As the tranquillizing effects of the Purple diminish, greed and the lust for power take hold. Penny Treasure, leader of the Decision Makers Council, dreams up an idea that could destroy the world forever.

In a desperate hunt to find the missing, clues are pieced together and some shocking secrets come tumbling out of the closet.

Excerpt from the beginning of Chapter One:
Ellie Arnold believes in reincarnation and thinks she may have been Marilyn Monroe in a previous life. When Ellie told her parents about this, they laughed out loud.

Twenty-three weeks later, June 22nd, one a.m. to be exact, Ellie tidied her freshly-bleached Marilyn Monroe hairstyle in the mirror. She applied a coat of red lipstick, penciled in a beauty spot and blew herself a kiss.

She'd turned the light off at ten, but insomnia must be an eight-hour virus that lurks in toothpaste. As soon as she'd cleaned her teeth and put her head on the pillow, the symptoms appeared. Too late to prevent infection, she lay alone in the dark and imagined the blood rushing AWAKE round her system: swoosh...swoosh...swoosh. It made her feet burn, her legs restless and her shoulders ache. It caused a sudden onset of wriggle-squirm-roll-flip. When it finally reached her brain, triggering an explosion of thought, she gave up and trudged downstairs to the lounge.

Follow Friday (13)

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted
by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read

Q: What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie? Please explain in graphic detail of goriness…

A: Well, for children, I would have to say Scary School by Derek the Ghost because of all the monsters in it. I think it would rank up there with the "Halloween Town" Disney movies.

As for the older crowd, I would have to say Anna Dressed in Blood, because of the whole blood and ghost thing, that just would be awesome !

What Are You Reading?

What Are You Reading Thursdays is feature I started to discuss what we are reading that week. Each week we will feature the book we are reading and talk about it, tell what we like about it, what we don’t like about it and discuss what it’s about. Feel free to follow along with us and share in the comments what you are reading this week or post on your blog as well.

This week my book is:
The Encyclopedia of Me by Karen Rivers

What I Like:
So far all I have read is the blurb on the back of the book and it sounds like it would be a pretty good read. Can't wait to start it.

What I Don't Like:
Right now, nothing. I haven't started it yet.

The Cover:
To be honest, covers are what draws me into a book. This cover just struck me as it would be a cute read. I could use something cute and light right now.

The Blurb:
A is for "Tink Aaron-Martin," "Aardvark," and "Amazing" in this wonderful alphabetical novel!

Tink Aaron-Martin has been grounded AGAIN after an adventure with her best friend Freddie Blue Anderson. To make the time pass, she decides to write an encyclopedia of her life from "Aa" (a kind of lava--okay, she cribbed that from the real encyclopedia) to "Zoo" (she's never been to one, but her brothers belong there).

As the alphabet unfolds, so does the story of Tink's summer: more adventures with Freddie Blue (and more experiences in being grounded); how her family was featured in a magazine about "Living with Autism," thanks to her older brother Seb--and what happened after Seb fell apart; her growing friendship, and maybe more, with Kai, a skateboarder who made her swoon (sort of). And her own sense that maybe she belongs not under "H" for "Hideous," or "I" for "Invisible," but "O" for "Okay."

Book Review: League of Strays

Title: League of Strays
Author: L.B. Schulman
Publisher: Amulet Books
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Release Date: October 1st, 2012
Source: Paperback, ARC
Purchase: Amazon
This suspenseful debut follows a group of teenage misfits in their delicious quest for revenge on those who have wronged them at their high school. When a mysterious note appears in Charlotte’s mailbox inviting her to join the League of Strays, she’s hopeful it will lead to making friends. What she discovers is a motley crew of loners and an alluring, manipulative ringleader named Kade. Kade convinces the group that they need one another both for friendship and to get back at the classmates and teachers who have betrayed them. But Kade has a bigger agenda. In addition to vandalizing their school and causing fights between other students, Kade’s real intention is a dangerous plot that will threaten lives and force Charlotte to choose between her loyalty to the League and her own conscience.

Wow, so where do I start? Well, I can honestly say that this book is not at all what I expected. I was intrigued by the cover at first. Just his eyes were enough to pull me in. Then I read the blurb on the back cover...I thought that this would be a pretty good read. And don't get me wrong, it was good, but it wasn't as great as I thought that it would be.

The writer is very articulate and the way they wrote this, it was not hard to imagine everything. I enjoy a book where you can visualize the story unfolding. If I can't visualize it, it's lost to me. Unfortunately for me, I had to put this book down a few times in the beginning before I could finally get lost into this book.

The characters are complex, but that's what brings this story to life. At first Kade's motives are questionable, but soon realize that there is something more to the story. Once the story starts to unfold we start to see the struggles the characters have to face and what Charlotte will do to try to stop them.

Charlotte's character is actually quite strong and she is the main one that can see Kade for what he really is worth once she can make it past his mesmerizing eyes. Zoe is one of my favorites, however, with her intense attitude toward things and people.

My final thoughts on this book are that this is a good read for people that enjoy mysteries, slight thrillers and contemporary pieces. I would recommend this book to anyone 13 years of age and older.

Waiting on Wednesday #WOW

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It's to spotlight upcoming reads which I can't wait to get my hands on.

This week my book is:
Gravity (The Taking #1) by Melissa West
Release date: October 30th 2012

In the future, only one rule will matter:

Don’t. Ever. Peek.

Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed — arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.

Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know — especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

This week they ask:
Top Ten Tuesday REWIND (pick a past topic that we've done that you missed or just want round 2 of!)

So with that in mind, I decided that I would go with one that I missed:
Top Ten Favorite Covers

I love all these covers for so many reasons, but the main reasons are because to me they are unique, the blend of colors are gorgeous and the photos are amazing!

A Little Help....

Hello all my wonderful followers and friends. I wanted to take this time to thank everyone for continuing to follow me here while I was on the long hiatus from blogging, the slowly coming back into it and everything in between. To show my appreciation, I'm going to host a special giveaway, have more reviews, what I call "book relay" and a few personal posts as well. But I need your help to do this.

In order for me to host this we need to reach 400 followers. I know we can do it if we all stick together. So this is what we need to do. We need to spread the word, tell your friends about Jump Into Books.

It's also coming up to my 1 year blog birthday! I will be hosting another giveaway for that as well. If we can reach the 400 followers by the end of the month when my blog turns 1 then I will add to the giveaway. If we reach it after my blogs birthday, I will host a separate giveaway. Sound good?

Also, I'm going away for the weekend and possibly the week, so I won't be updating for a little while, but when I come back, hopefully I will have some pics of my weekend with my little one and some book reviews to post.

Have a great weekend everyone! Stay safe!

Fangs, Fur & Fey Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Fangs, Fur & Fey Giveaway Hop hosted by:

I want to thank Kathy @ I Am A Reader, Not A Writer for my last minute entry. I have been so busy these past few weeks and totally forgot my entry. But no fear, I have 3 books up for grabs, so that means I will have 3 winners who will get to choose one (1) of the great books. Each book has been read by me at least once, so they are not brand spanking new, but they have all been taken care of. Now, here is what I have up for grabs, one (1) book for each category.
