Blog Tour: Ava & Taco Cat by Carol Weston #blogtour #guestpost @carol_weston

By
Published by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Release Date: April 7th 2015

Ava desperately wants a pet for her eleventh birthday-but gets way more than she bargained for when she adopts T-A-C-O-C-A-T.

When Ava Wren hears about an injured yellow tabby with mismatched ears, she becomes obsessed and wants to rescue him. She even picks out a perfect palindromic name: T-A-C-O-C-A-T. But when Taco joins the family, he doesn't snuggle or purr-all he does is hide. Worse, Ava's best friend starts hanging out with Zara, a new girl in fifth grade. Ava feels alone and writes an acclaimed story, "The Cat Who Wouldn't Purr." What begins as exciting news turns into a disaster. How can Ava make things right? And what about sweet, scared little Taco?

The New York Times called AVA AND PIP "a love letter to language. " With this second diary, Girls' Life advice columnist Carol Weston hits another home run.

I'll just come clean and confess that when I was a kid, I did not jump into books. My best friend was an avid reader and I was in awe.
Big books scared me. I was like Ava. I preferred sampling one Aesop fable each night – I liked that fables were short and pithy and about the length of a blog post.
Now I love jumping into books -- and swapping my world for someone else’s for hours at a time. In college, I was a literature major and read 100 Years of Solitude in Spanish and The Red and the Black in French. I’ve been in the same book club for decades, and I hate being caught without something to read. Big books? Bring ’em on! Yet that said, if an author works hard to whittle away his or her masterpiece, I’m ever grateful. (Did The Goldfinch have to be 784 pages? Did War and Peace need a two-part epilogue?)
For me, it's fun writing about a character who is a word nerd, yet not a bookworm. Ava Wren is a fifth grader who loves words and wordplay, but she never jumps into books. She wades in. No, not true. She sticks one toe in at a time. She checks out the front cover, skims the jacket flap, considers the size of the print, sees how many pages there are, and then and only then decides whether to take the book for a test drive. If she likes it, she'll keep going. If not, forget it, that book goes back on the shelf.
Fact is, I know my readers have other things they could be doing. So I write and rewrite and delete and revise until the final book keeps readers turning pages, laughing, reflecting, and wondering what will happen next.
It’s a kind of seduction.
There are a lot of dog stories out there, from Beautiful Joe and Old Yeller to Because of Winn Dixie. My new book, Ava and Taco Cat, is a cat story. But it’s also about how it feels when your best friend makes a new friend. And it's about the power of writing itself. The creative writing tips that Author Jerry Valentino offers the kids of Misty Oaks (page 150) are good for all ages. Here they are:
1.     Write from the heart: write about what you care about.
2.     Use your head: think about beginning, middle, and end.
3.     Show, don’t just tell: it’s better to reveal than to explain.
4.     Use your senses: sight, smell, sound, taste, touch.
5.     Provide details: paint pictures with words.
6.     Read your work aloud: listen to the rhythm and music of words.

I taught writing at Middlebury College in January of 2013 and used these tips and also the prompt techniques that Jerry uses with Ava and her classmates.
What else? Well, I hope you will jump into AVA AND TACO CAT with both feet, and that you like both reading and writing.
P.S. Here's a photo of my upside down cat, Mike.

Their disappearances have to be connected and Callie knows that her father was not a righteous man.

Since that fateful night, she's been plagued by graphomania -- an unending and debilitating compulsion to write. The words that flow from Callie's mind and through her pen don't seem to make sense -- until now.

As the anniversary of Hannah's vanishing approaches, more words and memories bubble to the surface and a new guy in school might be the key to Callie putting together the puzzle. But digging up the secrets she's buried for so long might be her biggest mistake.

[Blog Tour] Liv, Forever by Amy Talkington @soho_teen @amytalkington

Welcome to my stop of the Liv, Forever Blog Tour. Today I have my review of the book and a guest post especially for all you wonderful readers out there.

Title: Liv, Forever
Author: Amy Talkington
Publisher: Soho Teen
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Horror
Release Date: March 11th 2014
Source: From publisher for review

When Liv Bloom lands an art scholarship at Wickham Hall, it’s her ticket out of the foster system. Liv isn’t sure what to make of the school’s weird traditions and rituals, but she couldn’t be happier. For the first time ever, she has her own studio, her own supply of paints. Everything she could want.

Then she meets Malcolm Astor, a legacy student, a fellow artist, and the one person who’s ever been able to melt her defenses. Liv’s only friend at Wickham, fellow scholarship kid Gabe Nichols, warns her not to get involved, but life is finally going Liv’s way, and all she wants to do is enjoy the ride.

But Liv’s bliss is doomed. Weeks after arriving, she is viciously murdered and, in death, she discovers that she’s the latest victim of a dark conspiracy that has claimed many lives. Cursed with the ability to see the many ghosts on Wickham’s campus, Gabe is now Liv’s only link to the world of the living. To Malcolm.

Together, Liv, Gabe, and Malcolm fight to expose the terrible truth that haunts the halls of Wickham. But Liv must fight alone to come to grips with the ultimate star-crossed love.

Liv, Forever is a great book from start to finish. I immediately dived right into this and didn’t want to put it down. The characters and the story make this such an awesomely intense read that anyone is sure to love this one.

Talkingon has a way of bringing this story to life. A lot of books I can read and picture in my head everything that is going on from the characters to what is happening, but with Liv, Forever, I felt like I was sitting on my couch in the dark watching a really intense movie filled with horror and romance.

Olivia (Liv) Bloom is your typical foster child. She doesn’t feel loved where ever she goes and has something to fall back on, her art. She attends an upper class school in the Boston area only to be left out and unwelcome by most of the students. All she cares about is her art, however. She didn’t realize that she would fall in love and make a friend. She also didn’t realize that her life would change forever.

Liv is a very determined individual. When she sets out to accomplish something, she is determined to follow it through to the end, even if it kills her. She is not the selfish type as most heroines are in stories. She wants what is best for everyone, even if it means leaving the ones she loves.

Malcolm and Gabe are two very different people. Malcolm is popular and rich, a school prefect, and part of a secret society brought down through the generations. When he takes a notice with the new girl, he gets the attention of all his peers. But that doesn’t bother him.

Gabe is everything that Malcolm is not. He keeps to himself, has long hair and is considered a "freak". He has a very special gift. He can see and hear ghosts. Although he doesn’t want his gift, he considers it a burden. Yet it proves to be handy later in the book.

The story is a truly amazing read. It has a little suspense mixed with horror. You get to see ghosts from different eras and hear their stories of their last day before they died. You also get to see them all come together for the purpose of revealing who killed them and bringing those people to justice. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves horror, romance, paranormal, and justice. This book is simply amazing!!

Isla's major problem, though, is that she doesn't know what reaching her Destination actually entails, and soon the mystery surrounding her new afterlife seems more ominous than any purgatory she could possibly imagine. Blog Tour + Giveaway:The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanna Wiebe

Welcome to my tour stop for The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant by Joanne Wiebe! Hosted by Kismet Blog Tours! Joanna Wiebe stopped by today to discuss Prologues, so make sure you check that out and we also have a wonderfully awesome giveaway! I will tell you, this book was totally awesome and I can't wait to share my review with you, but I am, haha. I will be posting the review to this amazingly awesome book on the 21st (tomorrow) so check back for that!

After her mother’s death, 16-year-old art prodigy Anne Merchant moves from sunny California to the cold woodlands of Wormwood Island, Maine for what is supposed to be a fresh start. She is the newest student of Cania Christy, an elite boarding school that is as filled with secrets as it is with the world’s most privileged—and competitive—teens.

From the first day of school, Anne finds herself thrust into the Big V competition, an intense race to the top of the class. With enviable talents, she quickly becomes the enemy of every junior seeking the Big V—especially Harper, the presumed frontrunner.

Like every student, she is assigned a guardian, and a unique mission. Anne’s assignment is to “look deeper.” Anne is determined to succeed, and won’t let anything —not even her distractingly beautiful neighbor Ben—get in the way. But the deeper she looks the more questions arise, and the more she is forced to reexamine all of her assumptions—about the school, her classmates and even herself.

As layers of secrecy deepen, Anne leans on the friendship of Molly, a lifelong islander, and Pilot, the only junior not competing for the Big V, to make sense of this cloak-and-dagger world. But when people start disappearing, Anne uncovers a stunning truth that she must face head on—before she and everyone she loves is destroyed by it.

Rose Blog Tour + Guest Post

Rose isn't like the other orphans at St Bridget's Home for Abandoned Girls. Instead of dreaming of getting adopted by loving, wealthy parents, Rose wants to get a job and be independent. She doesn't need anyone but herself. She finds her escape working as a maid for Mr. Fountain, an alchemist. Unable to ignore the magic that flows throughout the grand residence, Rose realizes that just maybe; she might have a little bit of magic in her too. This new series featuring magicians, witches, talking cats, mist-monsters, and friendships will have young readers in a trance!

Doesn't this sound pretty amazing? I thought it did too that is why I had to read it and I was so glad that I did! You can read my review here.

Holly Webb is a bestselling author in the UK with her books Lost in the Snow and Lost in the Storm. As a child growing up in London, Holly fell in love with stories from Ancient Greek myths, which led to studying Latin and Greek and eventually reading Classics at University. She worked for five years as a children's fiction editor, before deciding to become a writer. The Rose books stem from a childhood love of historical novels, and the wish that animals really could talk. She lives in Reading with her husband and three small children.

Holly Webb talks about her Fantasy Cast for her book, Rose.

Fantasy Cast List
Rose – Chloe Moretz
This is so difficult! Rose needs to be brave, determined, but quite matter-of-fact. She’s horrified by her magic at first, as she wants to be a maid – she’s amazed that she’s been lucky enough to get a job, and she thinks the magic will spoil everything. So whoever played her would need to be able to get that determination across, but be overtaken by the excitement of the magic growing inside her.

At first I thought of Kirsten Dunst, as she was amazing as a child vampire in Interview With the Vampire, but of course that was years and years ago. Actually, if I could have any child actress from whenever, I think I would go for Mara Wilson, who played Matilda in the film. She seemed quite as I imagine Rose – pretty, but not beautiful, very sensible, but with a sly sense of humour lurking underneath. I wonder if Chloe Moretz (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Hugo) would be able to look young enough to play Rose? In the book Rose thinks she’s ten, but she’s not quite sure, and the hard life at the orphanage, and having to be grown-up very quickly, would make her look older.

Mr Fountain – Colin Firth
But only if he could grow a large, curly moustache.

Miss Sparrow – Emma Watson
Miss Sparrow needs to be very beautiful, possibly too beautiful – not to spoil the plot, but her looks are magically enhanced. I’d love to see Emma Watson play another magical character, but this time, an evil one. (Thinking about it, Emma Watson would also have been wonderful as Rose!)

Bill (Or Freddie! )– Asa Butterfield
Bill is another of the servants at Mr Fountain’s house. He’s an orphan too, and he loves being a little bit older and more used to working than Rose. But he’s actually very kind, although he does his best to hide it. He needs to sound like a Londoner, which I think is probably easier for a British actor. But then I can see Asa Butterfield as Freddie, the snotty, conceited magician’s apprentice, too! He has a magical look to him. Can I have him twice with different-coloured hair, please?!

Gus (voice) – Alan Rickman
Because he has a lovely voice!

Gus is Mr Fountain’s spoilt white cat, and one of the first magical things to happen to Rose is that she realises she can hear him talking. He’s proud, lazy and obsessed with fishpaste sandwiches.

I first saw Alan Rickman in Truly, Madly, Deeply a long time ago but he can also be fabulously nasty (as the sheriff of Nottingham and of course as Snape in the Harry Potter films).  He’s great at sounding grumpy, which is very important for Gus!

Guest Blog Post: Author Graham J. Sharpe

This is the first Guest Blog Post that I have hosted on here and I'm super happy. I have heard great things about Graham J. Sharpe's debut novel, Purple, and I can't wait to read it....

The Writing Process
Graham J. Sharpe

I think any writer would be lying if they told you that writing is easy. For me, it was a really long process. School was never my thing. I was bullied because I’m gay, and eventually I dropped out because fellow students could not accept me for who I was. Besides being bullied, I really hated the classroom environment. It took me a while to figure out that it wasn’t writing that I disliked but rather the idea of having someone tell me what to do.

One day I was talking to a friend and I realized that I had a good idea for a story. At that point I had taken a few creative writing courses, but didn’t have a college degree. I really didn’t think I had any business writing a book, but eventually I decided to go for it.

It took me a few years to write Purple. When I’m not writing I work as a flight attendant and combine travel with writing. I completed my first novel during the sleepless, jet-lagged hours spent in hotel rooms around the world. In the early days I wrote Purple on a notebook and had a friend type it out. I would write a little, put it away and then randomly start again.

I didn’t have a plan. In the beginning I didn’t even know who I was writing for. At first I thought it might be a short story for nine-year-old kids, but then the plot developed. I quickly realized that some of the main themes in Purple - bullying, friendship, trusting our intuition and dealing with loss - would appeal to an older demographic. After about three years I started writing more seriously. After two more years I finished the book.

I started to look for a literary agent and was referred to a London-based literary consultancy called Cornerstones. I wanted some feedback and I think that’s one of the biggest things new authors have to get over. It’s very scary at first to have someone read your work, but it really is important that you have an outsider look over it. Cornerstones read the entire manuscript and told me it had potential but needed some editing. I spent a further eighteen months rewriting.

I met an artist through another friend and she had some fantastic ideas for the cover. At that point I thought, “Well, maybe I ought to just publish it on my own.” So that’s what I did. Last September I published Purple as an eBook on Amazon, and I couldn’t be happier with where the book is today.

I think the most important thing that new writers need to remember is not to get discouraged. Take a break when you need one, have fun with the writing process and don’t give yourself a deadline. Creativity has to take its own course. Take your time and the words will come.

About the Author:

At the age of 12, author Graham Sharpe regularly danced around the lounge to Kate Bush's “Wuthering Heights.” Today, he still hasn't decided what he'll do when he grows up. So far, the East Sussex, England-based writer has worked in an ice cream shop, trained as a hairdresser, studied sociology and psychology, written for and performed with a touring theatre company, and backpacked across far-flung countries with loose change in his pocket. Graham now combines travelling with writing and he completed his first novel, Purple, during the sleepless, jet-lagged hours spent in hotel rooms around the world.
