A hip high school girl who loves music, writes songs, and is desperate for a ukelele, learns to her shock that her father did not abandon her years ago and has been trying to keep in touch. She begins to investigate him, only to discover that he has a new life with a new family, including the perfect stepdaughter, a girl who Minerva despises.
This reads like a coming to terms with your family type situation. Minerva is the main character of this book, who loves small things and is upset because she didn't get a ukulele for her birthday. She had also been told her whole life that her dad walked out on them, and that he is pretty much the bad guy and wants nothing to do with her. She soon finds out that that is not true and is led down a path of self destruction while finding out the truth.
I do recommend this book to people ages 13 and older. Even if you don't like contemporary books, I suggest giving this one a try.
Mary Amato is an award-winning children's book author, songwriter, musician, puppeteer, and poet. She writes for children of all ages, and is beginning to focus on YA. Her first YA novel was Guitar Notes. Mary lives with her family outside Washington, DC, where she also performs regularly, singing and playing her own songs.
